In 1936 James Agee and Walker Evans went on a journey to discover the daily existence of Southern sharecroppers. What came of it is a photojournalistic work of literary wonder. In it lie stories of tragedy and violence in some of the worst slums as experienced by the authors’ stays with three families over the course of one month. Sixty-one black and white photographs help document the level of poverty these families lived under.
